ABOUT THE COMMUNITY:

Kodi Bengre is a tiny fishing village in Southern India along a narrow strip of land snuggled between the Arabian Sea on one side and Suvarna river on the other. The community is made up of a couple hundred people. There is a mosque across the laguna and a few Hindu temples nestled into the community. Kodi Bengre is located just outside of the popular university town of Manipal with students from all over the world.

ABOUT THE LOCAL PARTNER:

You will work directly with the Shaka Surf School. As a surf camp, founders Ishita and Tushar aim to promote the sport and culture of surfing in India. Beyond teaching surf lessons, they do this educating the public about the ocean, dispelling fears of the sea that are deep rooted in the Indian society, and teaching ocean lifesaving skills. The school combines humanitarian work with surfing and provide under-privileged youth with an opportunity to experience the joy of surfing.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The main topics of interest for an audiovisual workshops series are about ocean safety, conservation, overfishing, sustainable tourism, plastic pollution, waste management, cultural conservation, and community-building.

You will be provided a campsite at the Shaka Surf Club (tent and supplies provided as well). Bathroom and fresh water shower facilities are available onsite. All meals at the campsite are prepared by our neighbors to give our guests the authentic taste of a local village cuisine! Typical food include rice, coconut chutney, rice cakes, savory fish, salads, and fresh fruit. Climate is humid and sunny. Volunteers can receive surf lessons from instructors or rent a board. Extracurricular activities include nature hikes to waterfalls and access to the university.
