ABOUT THE COMMUNITY:

Buho Buho is a tiny Indonesian fishing village on the Morotai Island. This community remains one of the most isolated places in Indonesia, and was only subject to outside influences at the start of the 20th century. A long way from the world of shopping malls and theme parks, this is where travelers come to get a truly off the beaten track adventure.  The remote location of these islands means that the Morotai people have had very little contact with the outside world. Today, the Morotai still abide by traditional practices and live largely off the land. Local people have a strong spiritual relationship with the forest with a belief system that emphasizes harmony with creation.

ABOUT THE LOCAL PARTNER:

You will work directly with the local nonprofit foundation, a Liquid Future, promoting surfing as a tool for youth empowerment and positive social change in the community. A Liquid Future is an after school tutoring program for local children and offers extracurricular activities for local teens.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The main topics of interest for an audiovisual workshops series are about marine conservation, overfishing, sustainable tourism, plastic pollution, toxic waste management, oil spills, irresponsible development, water shortages, cultural conservation, and community-building.

You will be provided a space at a Liquid Future with kitchen access. Meals are prepared by local families for an authentic taste of coastal cuisine. Typical food include coconut rice, savory fish, salads, and fresh fruit. Climate is humid and sunny. Extracurricular activities include surf excursions to world class waves, snorkeling, fishing trips, hikes, and more.
