ABOUT THE COMMUNITY:

Lobitos was once a small fishing village in Northern Peru but over the years through trials and tribulations transformed into a military and oil-rich surf town. It is one of the most energy-filled sites on Earth: the wind is relentless, flames from the power plants make for unearthly lighthouses along the shore, the earth is sucked dry by oil drills, and swells consistently pound the shore. The natural light is takes any artist’s breath away.

ABOUT THE LOCAL PARTNER:

You will work directly with the Lobitos Cinema Project (LCP) and WAVES Lobitos. LCP is an intercultural association and a participatory documentary film project working hand-and-hand with the local community to share their own stories in a spirit of community empowerment. LCP facilitates opportunities for youth participants and their families in coastal communities to share their stories. Local residents develop their voices as powerful tools through storytelling and introspective skills where they are able to convey their insights, observations, impressions, objectives with creativity, and intentions.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The main topics of interest for an audiovisual workshops series are about marine conservation, overfishing, sustainable tourism, plastic pollution, toxic waste management, oil spills, irresponsible development, water shortages, cultural conservation, and community-building.

The Artist in Residensea will be provided a space in a spacious house with kitchen access. All meals are prepared by local families for an authentic taste of coastal cuisine. Typical food include rice, savory fish, ceviche, salads, and fresh fruit. Climate is dry and sunny. Volunteers can receive surf lessons from instructors or rent a board. Extracurricular activities include hikes and surf excursions.
