Composting can be catchy! In partnership with Positive Change for Marine Life and the Waste to Wealth program, we co-facilitated a vibrant community workshop in the Solomon Islands, bringing together local Waste to Wealth staff, youth, artists, and creative minds to co-create a catchy, educational song—all about the Black Soldier Fly.
The goal? To flip the script on this often misunderstood insect. Instead of being seen as something “gross,” the Black Soldier Fly was reframed as a valuable ally in local composting efforts—a champion of food waste transformation, healthy soils, and even new income-generating opportunities. Unlike other flies, the Black Soldier Fly does not spread disease. It’s clean, efficient, and incredibly effective at turning organic waste into compost and protein-rich animal feed.
Together, we composed a joyful, easy-to-sing tune designed to accompany a stop-motion animation—a playful and accessible tool that supports community outreach and explains composting with the Black Soldier Fly in simple, relatable language. The song was created to travel with the community development team as they engaged with different villages, transforming education into a musical experience rooted in joy, trust, and local knowledge.
