 BUHO BUHO, MOROTAI, INDONESIA
Sea Level Rise

Sea level rise happens because of two main reasons: thermal expansion (as the ocean absorbs more heat, it expands) and melting of glaciers, ice sheets, and other land-based ice. The Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) has risen by 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters). In low-laying coastal communities, this has major consequences including flooding, erosion, and more severe storm surges that destroy everything in their paths. The communities where this is happening often lack access to critical information about climate change drivers and how vulnerable populations can adapt or build their resilience. Ibu Neke is a local mother from Buho Buho, a small fishing village on Morotai in Indonesia. This is her witness statement that illustrates the challenges small islands face.

Together with Changing Tides Foundation and Give and Surf, we had the honor of working with some incredible girls from Bastimentos, an island off Panama's Bocas del Toro. Once a quite fishing village, Bastimentos now relies on tourism to fuel its local economy. A Marine National Park, Bastimentos is a gem in the Caribbean, it's lush tropical forests reflecting the reefs just offshore. However, plastics, contaminations, and developments threaten Bastilife. The girls took photos of their community and natural surroundings. Afterwards, participants wrote down what they cherish about their community and what they want to change about Bastimentos. We compiled the girls' reflections and photos into a downloadable PDF below.
