Sea level rise happens because of two main reasons: thermal expansion (as the ocean absorbs more heat, it expands) and melting of glaciers, ice sheets, and other land-based ice. The Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) has risen by 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters). In low-laying coastal communities, this has major consequences including flooding, erosion, and more severe storm surges that destroy everything in their paths. The communities where this is happening often lack access to critical information about climate change drivers and how vulnerable populations can adapt or build their resilience.
