In the Solomon Islands, we partnered with Positive Change for Marine Life and their Waste to Wealth program to co-create a stop-motion animation designed to inspire a new way of seeing waste—and flies!
This project began with a collaborative workshop where local staff and creative minds came together to write a fun, educational song about the Black Soldier Fly—a misunderstood but incredible ally in composting. The catchy tune helped reframe the insect from something “gross” to something friendly and useful, showing how it helps turn food scraps into rich compost while supporting community well-being and even small-scale income generation. But the magic didn’t stop at the music.
We then invited local children to illustrate the story themselves. Guided by our facilitators, they drew scenes of composting, gardens, and helpful insects. These drawings were brought to life through stop-motion animation, a hands-on audiovisual storytelling technique that transforms individual images into a moving film.
The resulting animation is locally made, community-inspired, and culturally resonant—designed to be shown at home, in workshops, and in village gatherings as an engaging tool for outreach and education. It helps break down fear and stigma around composting and the Black Soldier Fly, while amplifying youth voices and creativity in the service of environmental change.
