UPCYCLING

LOBITOS, PERU

Local girls from Lobitos have the opportunity to join an all-girls after school group called Club de Chicas where participants learn through creative activities. The club is meant as a safe-space for the young girls of the community to meet and bond. The club meets every Friday.

On Fridays, the girls meet to do a quick beach cleanup and with the materials they find, the club completes a DYI upcycling project. One activity is designing jewelry from seashells found among the trash on the beach.

Facilitators demonstrate for participants how to use the various tools and then the girls design the necklace pieces themselves. The project is meant to raise local awareness about littering on the beach as well as engage the large surf tourism population passing through Lobitos.
